1. Lessons - Getting Acquainted Guide
When you see the above Icon, you and your students will be using one of Moodle's more powerful learning Activities.
In this section, you will have an opportunity to see how the Lesson activity is used to deliver content, and how you and your students can navigate through the content.
When ready to advance, click on the Next Page Icon on the right hand side of the page to advance through this book.
It is very important that you take time to look at the content in each page prior to allowing student access, so you know what is to be covered and what pre-teaching might be needed.
1.1. Getting Started ... Teacher and Student views
PLEASE NOTE: When logged in as a teacher, the lesson activity looks and behaves differently than when a student is logged in.
A typical Teacher view looks like this ...
The typical Student view looks like this ...
1.2. The Teacher View ...
The Teacher view has a series of clickable Tabs at the top of the page ...
The Lesson opens in the Preview mode. In this mode, you are able to click through the lesson, page by page. This allows you to preview the lesson just as the student would see it.
However ... if the Lesson contains a quiz question, then you will see something like this ... DO NOT ANSWER THE QUIZ QUESTION (your score might affect the overall course average in the Gradebook!)
On the next page, you will see how you can view the lesson content safely!
1.3. Lesson Edit Tab ... A quick way to view an entire lesson
If you click on the Edit tab, you will see two further tabs ...
The default is Collapsed, click on Expanded ..
Once the Expanded view opens, you will see the entire lesson, including any quiz or essay questions, and also, you will see how each page is linked to other pages in this lesson (look for Jump information).
This view looks a little different than the you would see in the Preview tab, but it does allow you to see in advance everything the student will see without having to answer any quiz or essay questions!
1.4. TAKE CARE -- EDIT BUTTON!
Your role within Moodle is setup to allow you to teach the content without making any changes.
However, it is necessary to give you EDIT rights to the lesson activity so you can see the content in full before you teach the lesson.
Please DO NOT click on the Gear Wheel link shown below and change any of the content ... that would make it very difficult for the External Evaluator to be able to determine the effectiveness of the content!
We really appreciate your cooperation!
1.5. Lesson Report Tab
The Report Tab allows you to see how successful your students are in this lesson, it also shows you how long they spent on this lesson (very little time spent in the lesson will also tell you which students just clicked through without reading the content ...).
The detailed statistics button will show much more detail about each question and the answers selected ...
1.6. Lesson Grade Essays Tab
If the lesson contains an essay question, the Grade Essays tab will quickly allow you to see the essay responses submitted, and allow you to grade those essays easily....
If the Lesson module you are using contains essay questions, then you will see the number of essays that need to be graded by clicking on the Tab.
Once the link opens, you will see the names of the students who have submitted essay for grading. You can download the essays for grading at another time, but if you do so, you will have to enter the point scores directly into the gradebook.
If you click on the Essay link (circled in Red above), you will be able to read the student's response, provide feedback in the Comment Area, and select a point value for the essay.
1.7. Viewing Gradebook - Student View
When the student completes a lesson that contains a quiz question, they will be able to view their grades in the gradebook.
PLEASE NOTE: MOODLE TAKES A FEW MINUTES TO UPDATE GRADES ON THE SERVER, SO THEY MIGHT HAVE TOP WAIT FOR 60 MINUTES TO SEE THEIR GRADES APPEAR. ASK YOUR STUDENTS TO BE PATIENT!
Student view when they complete a lesson ...
If they click on the View Grades link, it will take them to their gradebook ... they might have to scroll down to find their scores!
1.8. Viewing Grades - Teacher View
You will be able to see how successful your students have been in any individual lesson by clicking on the Reports tab ... (covered a little earlier in this overview).
You can also view your student's scores by clicking on the following link found under Course Administration ...
When you click on the Grades link, you will then see the gradebook for this course ...
If it you don't see the above view, click on the LAEGrader tab.
